The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert in five Kerala districts for Tuesday (November 3), warning of isolated heavy rainfall. Rain is expected to continue across the State over the next five days, with alerts issued for different districts until November 7.

The latest forecast, issued by the IMD at 1 pm on Tuesday, also indicates the possibility of thunderstorms and strong winds in Kerala between November 3 and 8.

Yellow alert in five districts on Tuesday

Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod are under a yellow alert on Tuesday. The IMD has forecast isolated heavy rainfall in these districts.

The weather department has also issued yellow alerts for the following districts over the next four days:

November 4: Kottayam, Idukki and Wayanad

November 5: Pathanamthitta

November 6: Idukki and Ernakulam

November 7: Pathanamthitta and Kottayam

A yellow alert indicates the possibility of isolated heavy rainfall, with precipitation ranging from 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm within 24 hours.

Cyclone Murasu weakens after crossing coast

Meanwhile, Severe Cyclonic Storm Murasu over the south coastal Andhra Pradesh region is expected to weaken gradually.

According to the IMD's 1.30 pm bulletin on Tuesday, the system is likely to move north-northwestwards and weaken into a cyclonic storm by noon. It is further expected to weaken into a deep depression by midnight.

Three cyclonic circulations are also influencing weather conditions over the region. They are located over Lakshadweep and adjoining areas, coastal Karnataka and south Tamil Nadu.

Thunderstorms and strong winds likely until November 8

The IMD has forecast isolated heavy rainfall in Kerala between November 3 and 8, with the possibility of 7 cm to 11 cm of rain within 24 hours.

Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and strong winds are also likely during this period. Winds may reach speeds of 30-40 kmph.

Will schools and colleges remain closed on Wednesday?

The rain forecast has raised concerns over possible holidays for schools and colleges in districts expected to receive heavy rainfall.

However, a yellow alert does not automatically mean educational institutions will remain closed. The decision to suspend classes on Wednesday (November 4) will be taken by the respective district collectors or other competent authorities after assessing local weather conditions.

Students and parents should follow official announcements from district administrations and educational institutions for updates on holidays or changes to class schedules.
