Kerala rain alerts: School, college holiday announcements expected as IMD warns of heavy rainfall

Several parts of Kerala continued to receive heavy rainfall on Sunday, July 5. 

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday forecast widespread rain across Kerala over the next five days and issued orange and yellow alerts for several districts.

For July 5 (Sunday), a yellow alert has been issued for Thrissur, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod.

The IMD says a yellow alert means heavy rain is likely at isolated places. Heavy rainfall is defined as 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm of rain within 24 hours.

July 6 (Monday): Orange alert for Kannur and Kasaragod

Rain is expected to intensify in parts of north Kerala on July 6 (Monday).

The IMD has issued an orange alert for Kannur and Kasaragod, warning of very heavy rain at isolated places. Very heavy rainfall refers to 115.6 mm to 204.4 mm of rain in 24 hours.

A yellow alert is also in place for Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode and Wayanad, where heavy rain is likely at isolated locations.

July 7 (Tuesday): Orange alert extended to Kozhikode

The orange alert will continue on July 7 (Tuesday), with Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasaragod expected to receive very heavy rain at isolated places.

A yellow alert has also been issued for Ernakulam, Thrissur, Malappuram and Wayanad.

July 8 (Wednesday): Yellow alert in nine districts

On July 8 (Wednesday), the IMD has placed Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod under a yellow alert.

Heavy rain is likely at isolated places in these districts.

July 9 (Thursday): Rain warning continues

The rain warning will continue on July 9 (Thursday), with a yellow alert remaining in force for Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasaragod.

School holidays to be decided by district authorities

District administrations may announce holidays for schools and colleges in areas affected by heavy rain on July 6 (Monday), July 7 (Tuesday), July 8 (Wednesday) and July 9 (Thursday).

The decision will depend on the weather conditions in each district. Students and parents have been advised to follow only official announcements from district collectors and educational institutions for updates on school holidays and class timings.
