Kerala rain alert: IMD issues orange warning for 6 districts as heavy downpours loom
Thiruvananthapuram: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heavy rainfall forecast for Kerala over the next five days, putting six districts on orange alert for August 24. A low-pressure area persisting over Gangetic West Bengal, adjoining Jharkhand, and northern Odisha continues to trigger light to moderate widespread rainfall across the state from August 24 to 28, 2026.
Very heavy rain warning and district alerts
The IMD has issued an orange alert for Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Malappuram, Kozhikode and Wayanad districts on Monday, August 24, forecasting isolated very heavy rainfall ranging between 115.6 mm and 204.4 mm within 24 hours.
In addition, yellow alerts predicting isolated heavy rainfall (64.5 mm to 115.5 mm) have been declared across multiple districts over the next three days:
- August 24: Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Palakkad, Kannur and Kasaragod.
- August 25: Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Malappuram, Kozhikode and Wayanad.
- August 26: Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki and Ernakulam.
High swell surge (Kallakkadal) warning
The Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) has issued a coastal alert for high waves and sea erosion under the ‘Kallakkadal’ phenomenon.
- Southern Kerala coast: High waves measuring 1.0 to 1.3 metres are expected along the coasts of Thiruvananthapuram (Kapil to Pozhiyoor), Kollam (Alappad to Edayar), and Alappuzha (Chellanam to Azheekal Jetty) until 11.30 am on August 25.
- Kanyakumari coast: High swell waves between 1.2 and 1.4 metres are expected until 8.30 am on August 25.
Coastal residents and fishermen are strongly advised to exercise extreme caution and avoid venturing into hazardous coastal zones during this period.
