Kerala power crisis: Himachal agrees to supply 250 MW electricity following MP KC Venugopal’s intervention

New Delhi: In a major relief to Kerala amidst a severe power crisis, Himachal Pradesh has agreed to supply 250 megawatts (MW) of electricity to the southern state. The agreement was reached following discussions between Alappuzha MP and Congress general secretary (Organisation) K C Venugopal and Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu.

Himachal Pradesh decided to allocate the 250 MW to Kerala by reducing its current power supply share to Tamil Nadu. Venugopal had brought Kerala's pressing energy shortage and immediate requirements to the attention of Chief Minister Sukhu, prompting the Himachal Pradesh government to initiate steps to provide the necessary power.

The technical and administrative procedures governing the transfer will be finalised through talks between the chief secretaries of both states. Their discussions will cover the logistics, schedule and other formalities involved in the power exchange.

With Kerala facing heightened electricity demand, this decision by Himachal Pradesh comes at a crucial moment. The emergency allocation is expected to ease the state’s current power strain to a significant extent.
