59% of Kerala Police staff suffer from poor sleep as stress levels surge; nearly half report memory issues

Kozhikode, Kerala: A new survey has found that 59% of police officers in Kerala suffer from poor sleep.
According to the study, 63% of officers sleep only 4 to 6 hours a day, while just 26% manage 6 to 8 hours of sleep. Ten per cent sleep less than four hours. The findings come from a survey conducted by the Social Police Division.
The survey, conducted to assess job-related stress, collected information on work, family life, and health. It also found that 48% of officers experience memory-related issues, while 47% report irritability and sudden anger.
The study was led by Dr. P.K. Raheemudheen, clinical psychologist at the Government Mental Health Centre, Thrissur. A total of 9,242 personnel, from civil police officers to the State Police Chief, participated in the survey.
Former DGP Jacob Punnoose said steps must be taken to address the rising stress levels among police personnel.
“Police personnel should be given mandatory weekly leave. Sports and recreational facilities must be set up near police stations. They should have opportunities to spend time with their families, and counselling must be provided for those experiencing mental stress,” he said.
