Baby missing case: Kerala govt files plea at court; Anupama ends hunger strike

Thiruvananthapuram: The state government has submitted a petition at the Vanchiyoor Family Court seeking to annul the adoption procedures of the missing baby of Kerala woman Anupama.

“The government intervened immediately to avoid complications later. The procedures for adoption were taking place in the court and in final stage. The court was supposed to deliver a verdict next week. Once the verdict is delivered, it will be a tough task for getting the baby back. Our concern was to convey the court the allegations levelled by Anupama before a verdict is delivered,” said Veena George, Minister for Family Welfare, Child and Women Development.

A departmental inquiry has been initiated and is monitored by the principal secretary. “It was after taking legal expert’s opinion, the state government has taken a decision to approach the court. The state adoption agency, which is no way involved in the case, has filed the petition.”

She also said that in a couple of days more details of the adoption procedures followed will come to light.

Soon after the government approached the court, Anupama has ended the hunger strike.

The state government has confirmed that the baby of Anupama was adopted by a couple in Andra Pradesh. Anupama had already demanded a DNA test to prove that it is her baby.

Anupama S Chandran, a former member of SFI and the daughter of a Peroorkada CPI-M area committee member Jayachandran, came up with the allegations against her family members a few days back.

“I am happy with the government’s move. I was planning to approach court seeking justice but with the government I hope I will get justice,” Anupama said.

Anupama had fallen in love with DYFI Peroorkada area president Ajith who was already married. Anupama's parents were not happy over this alliance. Anupama and Ajith could not start living together as he was not legally divorced at that time.

Meanwhile, Anupama gave birth to a baby on October 19 last year. According to Anupama’s complaint, the child was taken away from her by her father and relatives three days after the delivery. They had promised that the baby will be brought back once Anupama’s sister is married off. However, they did not bring the child back even after her sister’s wedding.
