Kerala man marks 1000 days of protest against SilverLine project

Kottayam: AT Varghese, a dedicated protester from Madappally, has achieved a major milestone by participating in the anti-Silverline protest for 1000 consecutive days. Living just near the protest site, Varghese has been a daily presence, guarding the border and joining the protest without missing a single day.
Speaking on the occasion of his 1000th day of protest, Varghese shared his determination to stay committed. “I decided from the beginning to participate for as many days as possible. I live nearby and make sure to be the first to arrive, clean the area, set up seats, and stay there until 11:30 am,” he explained. His dedication has made him a symbol of persistence in the ongoing struggle.
Balancing protest and daily life
When asked if he had ever been unable to attend due to personal needs, Varghese responded, “I have not had to go far. I have managed to come here every day.” the 80-year-old veteran said. “I have served in the Border Roads and have won the President's Award,” he added.
Varghese believes that his background as a veteran has helped him endure the long protest. “The lesson from my work is to stay determined and focused on the task at hand,” he said.
Why the protest matters to Varghese
Varghese is protesting the SilverLine project, which he believes threatens his land. “The road runs through the middle of my land, and this cut-off will render it useless,” he said, explaining his personal stake in the issue. His message is clear: “All orders regarding the SilverLine project should be withdrawn and the project cancelled.”
