Kerala expat’s 32-year journey ends in orphanage, abandoned by son who inherited his crores

Thrissur: The life of 59-year-old Ramesh Menon, once a successful expatriate, has taken a tragic turn, leaving him in an orphanage after decades of hard work abroad. From earning a good living from his employement in Muscat, Dubai, and Sharjah, Ramesh now resides in a government-run orphanage in Kuttippuram. His story, marked by health struggles, family betrayal, and financial loss, is almost like a movie plot.
Ramesh, originally from Chendamangalam in North Paravur, spent 32 years working overseas. However, his health deteriorated due to diabetes and other ailments, forcing him to undergo extensive treatment. In 2016, his son Kalyan visited him while he was in the ICU in a Sharjah hospital. During this visit, the decision was made to transfer Ramesh's assets to his son, on his request, through a power of attorney arranged by the Indian Embassy.
A tragic turn of events
When conditions improved, Ramesh returned to Kerala with the help of friends. However, instead of being taken home by his son, he was left at a hotel in Kodungallur. Soon, his condition worsened, and he was abandoned near the Kodungallur temple. The locals recognised him and helped file a complaint with the Human Rights Commission.
The Irinjalakuda Maintenance Tribunal issued an order for Menon’s son to provide him with protection under the Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act. Despite this, Ramesh’s son ignored the order, leading to a legal battle. After a series of court hearings, a case was registered against his son. Later, the son managed to obtain a stay order from the High Court.
In 2024, the High Court withdrew the stay, and a new order was issued to bring Ramesh's son to court. However, as of now, police have been unable to locate him.
