Minority Scholarship Row: Kerala govt to approach SC challenging HC verdict

Thiruvananthapuram: Challenging the High Court verdict setting aside the 80:20 minority scholarship proportion, the state government will approach the apex court. The Kerala High Court in its verdict questioned the right of the state government in deciding the proportion in minority scholarship. The government received legal advice to challenge it in the court.

The Chief Minister of Kerala, Pinarayi Vijayan, alleged that that there has been a move to separate people communally over minority scholarship row. “The verdict raised certain concerns among people. It is unnecessary and I don’t understand the reason behind it,” said Pinarayi.

"It was made clear in many instances that all eligible candidates will get scholarship without reducing even a single rupee. Despite these assurances, concerns were raised on vested interests," added Pinarayi Vijayan.

Initially, the UDF was divided over minority scholarship issue. The Congress had welcomed the decision initially. However, in view of the resistance of the Muslim League, UDF convened a meeting and decided to oppose it in one voice in the assembly.
