Kerala HC bans political events at Thrissur's Thekkinkadu Maidan

Thrissur: The Kerala High Court has prohibited holding of political meetings and events at Thekkinkadu Maidan, the cultural heart of Thrissur city. The court has directed authorities not to permit the venue to be used for political rallies, public meetings, or any other gatherings.

Under the order, political parties will no longer be allowed to hold public meetings, rallies, or campaign events at Thekkinkadu Maidan. The directive is part of the court's efforts to regulate the use of public spaces for political purposes.

The High Court observed that politics has no place in temples and temples have no connection with politics, making it clear that such premises should not be used for political activities.

The court noted that it had issued similar directions in the past. However, several organisations continued to use the ground for political programmes by holding events under different names. Taking note of this, the court has now issued a stricter order barring the venue from being allotted for any kind of political programme.

At the same time, the court clarified that there is no restriction on allotting Thekkinkadu Maidan for programmes organised by the Devaswom Department or temples, and such events may continue to be held free of charge. However, strict restrictions will remain in place for other government departments.

Thekkinkadu Maidan has long been a key venue for major political events organised by almost all major political parties in Kerala. The latest order is expected to impact political activities in Thrissur.

The court said the move is intended to preserve the sanctity of Thekkinkadu Maidan and protect the rights of the public. The ban applies only to political events and will not affect cultural and religious festivals such as the Thrissur Pooram.
