Kerala introduces special ‘KL-90’ registration series for government vehicles; KSRTC to retain ‘KL-15’

Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala government has announced a new registration code series for all government vehicles in the state. Under the new system, vehicles owned by the Central and State governments, as well as local bodies, will be registered under a special code – KL-90.

A draft notification regarding the new registration series has already been issued.

Unified registration for all government vehicles

All government vehicles in Kerala will now be registered at a single Regional Transport Office (RTO), Thiruvananthapuram RTO-2. Currently, such vehicles are registered at district-level RTOs, leading to variations in registration numbers across the state.

The move is aimed at improving transparency, tracking, and accountability of government-owned vehicles, especially after several complaints regarding the misuse of official vehicles were reported.

What are the codes for each government category

The new system categorises vehicles based on ownership:

KL-90 and KL-90 D – State government vehicles

KL-90 A and KL-90 E – Central government vehicles

KL-90 B and KL-90 F – Vehicles belonging to local self-government institutions

KL-90 C – Semi-government organisations, corporations, boards, and universities

Officials say the system will make it easier to track official vehicles, verify their validity, and monitor maintenance and usage records.

KSRTC vehicles to continue with KL-15

Meanwhile, Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) buses will continue to use the KL-15 registration code. KSRTC vehicles will be registered under Thiruvananthapuram RTO-1, and this code will remain unchanged.
