Surge in fever cases: Dengue, leptospirosis and now malaria too raise concern

Thiruvananthapuram: The rise in fever cases across Kerala is causing widespread concern, as related deaths continue to occur. While the majority of deaths are due to dengue (25) and leptospirosis (14), experts are cautioning citizens to remain vigilant, as admissions for fever-related illnesses can strain hospitals in certain areas. Moreover, the state has witnessed an increase in malaria cases. Health department data indicates that around 32 persons have been affected by malaria in the ongoing month of June.

On Friday alone, 13,769 approached the hospital due to fever-related issues. Of that 248, were admitted, including those suspected of swine flu. A boy in Malappuram succumbed to swine flu on Thursday. 

In the last three days, the hospitals in the state are witnessing more than 13,000 fever cases. Those having intense or prolonged fever have been urged to seek medical care.
