Assembly election 2026: Will Kerala vote in April? Key clues emerge

Thiruvananthapuram: The electoral process for the Kerala Assembly elections is expected to gather momentum with the Election Commission of India scheduled to visit the state on March 5 to review poll preparedness, law and order arrangements, and logistical coordination.

The delegation will be led by Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, along with Election Commissioners Sukhvinder Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi.

Officials are expected to hold discussions with senior state authorities, including the Chief Secretary and Director General of Police, focusing on security arrangements, election infrastructure, and administrative readiness.

Sources indicate that the Kerala Assembly elections are likely to be held in mid-April 2026, possibly during the second week of the month. Political and administrative indications suggest that voting may be conducted in a single phase, similar to the 2021 Assembly elections.

In the previous election cycle, polling was held on April 6, 2021, in a single phase, with counting completed on May 2, 2021. While some political discussions have considered multi-phase polling, especially after local body elections were conducted in two phases, election authorities are reportedly leaning toward single-phase polling.

Political activity is also expected to intensify with Prime Minister Narendra Modi scheduled to visit Kerala on March 6 to lead the Bharatiya Janata Party’s campaign outreach.

During the visit, Modi is expected to unveil the NDA’s state election manifesto and participate in meetings with community and community representatives. The visit will also include inauguration of several railway development projects as part of infrastructure initiatives in the state.

Observers believe the Election Commission may formally announce the election schedule after the Prime Minister’s visit. Meanwhile, major political alliances in Kerala have accelerated candidate selection, coalition discussions, and campaign planning as the state moves toward a high-stakes electoral contest.
