Pinarayi, Kannur: A video has surfaced showing the moment an explosive detonated in the hand of a CPM worker at Pinarayi in Kannur district, leaving him with severe injuries and the loss of fingers on his right palm.

The incident, which took place around noon on Tuesday near the Venduttayi canal, has prompted a police investigation after the visuals appeared to contradict the injured man’s initial account of how the blast occurred.

What do the visuals show?

The video shows Vipin lighting the fuse of an explosive that he was holding in his hand, following which it suddenly explodes. The blast appears to have taken place while he was recording reels. In the footage, voices can be heard saying, “hand is injured” and “Let’s go to the hospital”.

What was Vipin’s initial explanation?

Vipin reportedly told doctors that the incident occurred when an unexploded palm-leaf firecracker was picked up and went off in his hand while bursting crackers. However, hospital authorities and the police did not find this version convincing.

Why did police doubt the claim?

The police had already initiated an investigation into the incident, as the explanation given by Vipin raised suspicion. The emergence of the video has now contradicted his initial account and provided clearer evidence of how the blast occurred.

What is Vipin Raj’s background?

Vipin is an accused in several criminal cases, including the vandalisation of a Congress office. He had earlier been externed under the KAAPA law. The explosion severely damaged his palm, resulting in the loss of fingers.

Although the injuries are serious, Vipin is said to be recovering at the hospital, according to reports.
