41-yr-old lady staff in Kottayam chases chain snatcher for 200m; hands her to police

Kaduthuruthy: Biji Biju, a 41-year-old lady staff working at a shop in Kottayam’s Kaduthuruthy, chased a woman who tried to escape after snatching her chain. After a series of dramatic events, the accused Shiny Sreedharan, a 51-year-old woman from Vellassery, was arrested by police.
The incident happened on Monday around 11:00 AM when Biji was on her job at Mariya Fancy Ladies Centre near Kaduthuruthy church. The woman approached her and started to ask the rates of different items in the shop. Amid this another woman entered the shop. The former told Biji that she can attend to the latter. When the other woman left, the woman asked for items including a star. While Biji was packing the items, the woman threw pepper powder on her eyes instantly. She snatched the chain from Biji and fled.
Biji who regained her state of mind chased the woman for about 200 metres. When the woman reached the bypass which is under construction, Biji was able to grab the tip of her saree. The woman then tried to swallow the chain. Biji blocked her and she tried to bite. On hearing the commotion created by Biji, a youngster named Shinoj Kaithamattam rushed to the spot. Biji and the youngster were able to overpower the woman. By then onlookers informed police. The police nabbed the woman and produced her before the court. She was remanded.
The police informed that the chain was not gold but it was Biji’s mangalsutra. Meanwhile, a team of forensic officials reached the shop and collected evidence. According to the shop owner, the woman had visited the shop three days before.
