Disheartening 46 hours: Joy’s body identified and received by family

Thiruvananthapuram: Comprehensive rescue efforts were launched in the state capital over the last 46 hours in an attempt to rescue Joy, a worker who had gone missing in the Amayizhanchan canal. Unfortunately, he could not be saved and his decomposed body was recovered this morning.

MLA V K Prasanth stated that Joy’s employer, colleagues and a panchayat member from his village confirmed his identity. Subsequently, the family officially acknowledged receiving Joy’s body.

The MLA opined that the body may have been washed away during the accident or afterwards when the water authority opened gates.

Joy’s body was found stuck inside a pipe in a canal in Thakaraparambu. His identity was confirmed during the procedures at Thiruvananthapuram Medical College.

Joy’s body was found a metre away from where he had gone missing, spotted by workers who were assigned the task by the corporation.

At approximately 9:15 AM, Mayor Arya Rajendran informed the media that Joy’s body had been recovered. His relatives rushed to the hospital upon hearing the news.

The Navy had also joined the rescue operations.

Joy drowned around 11 AM in the Amayizhanchan canal on the stretch under the Thampanoor railway track on Saturday. The accumulation of garbage inside the canal had made the rescue efforts extremely challenging. Water was flowing under the track in a 140-metre-long tunnel. Despite unprecedented rescue efforts to find Joy, they proved futile.
