‘Aadhaar is important, sir’: Prisoner who escaped from jail walks into police station, flees again

Perumbavoor: In an unusual turn of events, a prisoner who escaped from Aluva Sub Jail walked into the Perumbavoor police station looking for his Aadhaar card - only to flee again after realising that the police could identify and arrest him.

The accused, Madhur Sonowal, a native of Assam, had escaped from the jail and later turned up at the police station believing that his Aadhaar card was kept there. Police have intensified the search for him.

Madhur was arrested by the Edathala police last week in connection with a mobile phone theft case and was subsequently lodged at Aluva Sub Jail.

Escape from Aluva Sub Jail

He escaped from the jail on August 24. Police suspect that he climbed onto the roof of an under-construction building inside the jail compound and escaped by jumping over a high boundary wall. Madhur was arrested by the Edathala police with the assistance of the Perumbavoor police.

After escaping, he went to the Perumbavoor police station and asked officers to return his Aadhaar card, believing it was kept there.

Police recognise him, suspect flees

The officers on duty initially failed to identify him. However, Madhur spotted the police personnel who had arrested him at the station and realised that he could be caught again.

He then ran out of the station and escaped.

Following the incident, police have intensified searches in the Perumbavoor area. A lookout notice has been issued, and information about the accused has been circulated to police stations across the state.

As police suspect that he may try to leave Kerala by train, the Railway Protection Force (RPF) has also been alerted.

Authorities are also planning to inform the Assam Police, as Madhur may attempt to return to his home state. Police have launched a detailed inquiry into the security lapses surrounding the incident.
