IMD warns of high tides; Fishermen advised to stay off coast in Kerala, Karnataka and Lakshadweep

Thiruvananthapuram: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning to fishermen, advising against fishing in the coastal regions of Kerala, Karnataka, and Lakshadweep. The ban comes in response to forecasts of strong winds and adverse weather conditions.
30/07/2024 to 31/07/2024: The IMD has warned of strong winds and severe weather over the Kerala-Karnataka-Lakshadweep coasts, with wind speeds expected to reach 35 to 45 kmph, occasionally gusting up to 55 kmph.
30/07/2024 to 03/08/2024: The Central Arabian Sea is likely to experience strong winds with speeds of 45 to 55 kmph, occasionally reaching up to 65 kmph.
30/07/2024: Harsh weather conditions with strong winds of 35 to 45 kmph, occasionally up to 55 kmph, are expected over the Gulf of Mannar, southern parts of the Tamil Nadu coast adjoining the Kanyakumari coast, northern regions of the Southeast Arabian Sea, southern and central regions of the Bay of Bengal, and southern parts of the North Bay of Bengal.
31/07/2024: Strong winds with speeds of 45 to 55 kmph, occasionally up to 65 kmph, and harsh weather are expected over the Central West Bay of Bengal. Gusty winds with speeds of 35 to 45 kmph, occasionally up to 55 kmph, are also expected in the Gulf of Mannar, south Tamil Nadu coast adjoining Kanyakumari coast, northern parts of the Southeast Arabian Sea, South Bay of Bengal, Central East Bay of Bengal, and southern parts of the North Bay of Bengal.
01/08/2024: Gusty winds of 45 to 55 kmph, occasionally up to 65 kmph, and severe weather conditions are expected in the Central West Bay of Bengal and adjoining North West Bay of Bengal. Gusty winds up to 45 kmph, occasionally reaching up to 55 kmph, are expected over the Gulf of Mannar, southern regions of Tamil Nadu coast adjoining Kanyakumari coast, central east regions of Arabian Sea adjoining northeast Arabian Sea, southern Bay of Bengal, central east Bay of Bengal, and southern parts of the North Bay of Bengal.
02/08/2024 to 03/08/2024: Harsh weather with strong winds at speeds of 35 to 45 kmph, occasionally up to 55 kmph, is expected over the Gulf of Mannar, southern regions of Tamil Nadu coast adjoining Kanyakumari coast, Southern and central regions of Bay of Bengal and southern parts of the North Bay of Bengal.
Fishermen are advised to avoid fishing in these areas during the specified dates. Please refer to the attached map for detailed information.
The National Center for Oceanographic Studies (INCOIS) has issued a warning for high tides along the Kerala coast, expected to reach heights of 2.1 to 2.8 metres until 11:30 PM on July 31, 2024.
Similarly, INCOIS has forecasted high tides of 2.0 to 2.6 metres along the Tamil Nadu coast, also expected until 11:30 PM on July 31, 2024.
- As rough seas are likely to intensify, stay away from danger areas as instructed by the authorities.
- Keep fishing vessels (boats, ships, etc.) safely moored in the harbour. Maintaining a safe distance between boats can help avoid the risk of collision. Ensure the safety of fishing equipment.
- Completely avoid trips to the beach and activities at sea during harsh weather.
