'Rasta Apatti Kavach': Understanding Kerala's new accident insurance scheme by IMA

Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala chapter of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) has launched an accident insurance scheme for the general public, with a target of enrolling one lakh people between the ages of 18 and 70. The initiative is being rolled out in collaboration with 116 IMA branches and private hospitals across the state.

The scheme, titled 'Rasta Apatti Kavach – Road Safety Insurance', is aimed at ensuring financial protection for those involved in road accidents. It will be implemented by the New India Assurance Company, with special focus on autorickshaw drivers, taxi drivers, and two-wheeler riders.

According to Dr Joseph Mani, chairman of the IMA Drive Safe Project, the scheme also seeks to raise awareness about road safety. It is expected to be launched within a week, with at least five hospitals in each district joining as partner institutions. The list of participating hospitals will be announced later.

Beneficiaries can also receive treatment at hospitals not affiliated with the scheme, with expenses reimbursed subsequently.
