Vandiperiyar (Idukki): Food waste from a Tamil film shoot was dumped on the national highway near a higher secondary school in Vandiperiyar on Friday evening, causing a foul odour and concern among locals.

Taxi drivers who witnessed the incident immediately informed the Vandiperiyar panchayat office. The panchayat secretary and officials rushed to the spot, stopped the disposal, and reported the matter to police.

Jeep seized, driver and workers handed over

The pick-up jeep carrying the waste was seized. The driver, M.C. Wilson from Ayyampuzha (Ernakulam), and three workers from Pambanar (Idukki) were handed over to police. A case has been registered against the driver.

Owner fined for illegal dumping

The vehicle belongs to Janet Rajeev from Palarivattom, Ernakulam, who was fined Rs 50,000 for the violation.

Nature of the waste

The dumped material, tied in sacks, consisted of leftover, decaying food from the film shoot. Its foul smell raised concerns about hygiene and safety for students and passersby.

Community action praised

Quick reporting by the taxi drivers and prompt action by the panchayat helped prevent further health risks and kept the school area safe.
