CPM general secretary M.A. Baby has issued a statement clarifying his recent comments on the Malayalam film Prince and Family, which features actor Dileep in the lead role. His initial remarks, made after a theatre screening in Delhi alongside members of the local Malayali community, attracted criticism on social media, with many questioning the political implications of his praise.

The controversy stems from the senior CPM leader’s comments describing the film as “suitable for family viewing” and one that “conveys a good message.” Since Dileep is an accused in the high-profile actress assault case, his continued involvement in the entertainment industry remains a fiercely debated topic in Kerala’s cultural and political spheres.

Addressing the backlash, the veteran leader released a detailed clarification in which he said:

“Many friends have complained to me directly or indirectly that I expressed an opinion after watching Prince and Family. I would like to clarify that I was persuaded to watch the film following persistent requests from a young, aspiring film director from Kerala.”

He further stated that while the film may not possess exceptional artistic merit, it offered a “healed” viewing experience — free from violence or vulgarity.

“It seemed like a film with a good message. While some may hold differing views, I only shared my thoughts without naming anyone other than the director,” he said.

He firmly dismissed suggestions that his comments amounted to an endorsement of the actor.

“I don’t believe this should be interpreted as justifying the accused actor who appeared in the film,” he said.

He acknowledged that several comrades and well-wishers had expressed their disapproval, some “with good intentions” and others “perhaps without.”

“I am saddened that the party and those who care for me were placed in an uncomfortable position, which was never my intention,” he added.

The incident has reignited debate within the leftist cultural community about the fine line between art appreciation and political messaging, particularly when it involves individuals facing serious legal allegations.
