Alappuzha, Kerala: A houseboat was completely gutted by fire on Chithira Kayal on Saturday, prompting the immediate evacuation of tourists on board. Smoke was first noticed inside the vessel before flames spread rapidly. A video later showed the boat engulfed in thick smoke.

Tourists evacuated safely

The tourists, reportedly from a resort in Kumarakom, were swiftly brought to the shore. Police and authorities confirmed that there were no casualties. The incident occurred around 4.30 pm when two passengers were aboard the houseboat.

Efforts to douse flames fail

Staff and others on site attempted to control the fire with water, but their efforts were unsuccessful. More than half of the houseboat was destroyed. An official from the Alappuzha fire station, which dispatched a fire tender to the site, said the boat was completely gutted.

Cause under investigation

Initial reports suggest that a short circuit may have triggered the blaze. Fire officials noted that the fire appeared to emanate from the engine area of the houseboat, but the exact cause remains under investigation.
