Higher rewards for reporting public garbage dumping to enhance cleanliness in Kerala

Thiruvananthapuram: The reward amount for those who provide evidence and information about those who throw garbage in public places has been increased. From now on, the local government department has decided to pay one-fourth of the fine as reward. This is to increase public participation in raising awareness about the crime of throwing garbage in public places.

Till now, those who provide information were given Rs 2,500. Minister M.B. Rajesh said that those who inform about serious crimes will be given a high reward. Those who provide information will get money. The minister also directed that local institutions must ensure those who provide information get the amount properly.

All sections including Harithakarmasena members, NSS volunteers, SPC cadets, college students etc. will be made part of the surveillance system. More complaints are being received on the single WhatsApp number 9446700800. A control room has also been set up in the Principal Directorate.

8674 complaints have been received so far regarding the dumping of waste in private and public places. 5361 complaints with accurate information were received. Actions were taken for 4525 complaints including removal of waste (84.41%). A fine of Rs 33.5 lakh was imposed on 439 complaints. Legal action was also initiated against 31 persons. The highest numbers are in Ernakulam, and Thiruvananthapuram districts and fewer in Wayanad.

Individuals and institutions are currently fined up to Rs 5000 for throwing or burning garbage. Those who discharge sewage into public places or water bodies are fined between Rs 5,000 and Rs 50,000. Those who deposit garbage, rubbish or excreta in water bodies are liable for a fine of Rs 10,000 to Rs 50,000 and imprisonment for six months to one year.

The fine for selling banned plastic ranges from Rs. 11,000 to Rs. 50,000. Illegal transportation of waste or excreta in vehicles will result in action including seizure and confiscation of the vehicle.
