‘Pottiye Kettiye’ parody: Govt finds no ground for further legal action

Thiruvananthpuram: According to sources familiar with the matter have indicated that the government does not intend to act against the viral ‘Pottiye Kettiye’ parody video at this stage.

According to these sources, authorities believe there is no sufficient legal basis to proceed further and have decided not to flag or report the content to Meta. An official confirmation is still awaited.

The development comes amid an ongoing case registered by the Thiruvananthapuram cyber police against four individuals linked to the creation and circulation of the parody song, which alludes to the alleged gold theft at the Sabarimala temple. The song, set to the tune of the popular Ayyappa devotional ‘Swamiye Ayyappo’, gained widespread attention after it was used by the Congress during its campaign against the Left Democratic Front in the recent local body elections.

According to the FIR, the parody was circulated through online platforms, including YouTube, and shared among the public and religious groups before December 16. Police alleged that the act was carried out with deliberate intent to insult religious sentiments, provoke emotions, and disturb communal harmony.

The FIR named lyricist Kunjabdulla Chalappuram as the first accused, singer Danish Malappuram as the second accused, and two others involved in filming and production. The complaint was filed by the general secretary of the Thiruvabharanapatha Samrakshana Samithi, who alleged that the parody distorted a sacred devotional composition and misused religious content for political purposes.

While the police case remains on record, sources suggest the state government currently sees no grounds for escalation at the governmental or platform-regulation level, pending any further legal or administrative review.

Further updates awaited.
