Govindachamy nabbed hours after escape from Kannur prison; jumps into well while fleeing cops

Kannur: In a major development, Soumya murder case convict Govindachamy, who escaped from Kannur Central Jail on Friday morning, was captured from a secluded property in the district.

He was found hiding in an abandoned property in Talap, just about two kilometres from the jail in Pallikkunnu.

According to reports, Govindachamy attempted to flee when he realised police were closing in. In a desperate move, he jumped into a well to avoid capture. However, the police team quickly caught up and pulled him out of the well, bringing an end to the dramatic jailbreak episode.

The development came hours after Govindachamy was found missing from the prison. His absence came to light during an inspection of his cell in the early hours of Friday, officials said.

Jail authorities launched an immediate search operation in and around the prison premises, but the inmate was nowhere to be found.

Kannur Town Police said they were informed about the jailbreak at 7 am.

Soumya, a 23-year-old woman from Manjakkad near Shornur, was raped and murdered allegedly by Govindachamy while travelling on a passenger train from Ernakulam to Shornur on 1 February 2011.
