Thrissur: The Central government's Child Care Centers (Crèche) scheme has faced a significant setback in the state. Approximately 500 crèches were operational under the Department of Women and Child Development. However, due to the non-payment of monthly subsidies, 350 of these crèches have now closed, leaving only 150 crèches functioning in the state.

The funding structure for the crèche scheme included a 60 percent share from the central government and a 40 percent share from the state. Employees at the crèches were receiving wages of Rs 3,000, while helpers were paid Rs 1,500. With the government funds no longer available, this amount had to be utilised for purchasing food and other essentials for the children. The situation has impacted nearly a thousand employees across the state, many of whom have ceased work due to non-payment.

Local bodies are urged to take action to revive the crèche facilities. The appointment of employees, wage distribution and addressing grievances must be coordinated with the Central Government through the Department of Women and Child Development. Establishing such facilities at workplaces is a crucial support system for parents with young children.

As numerous individuals migrate from other districts for work, many children are left either in the care of relatives or away from their mothers. Parents express concerns about the absence of safe environments for their children, especially those attending nurseries and schools after class hours.

Childcare centres operating within government institutions that employ over 50 staff members are classified as crèches. These facilities typically offer amenities such as toys, CCTV for parental monitoring, play areas, air conditioning, toilets and sleeping quarters. The centres are exclusively for children under six years of age, ensuring a dedicated space for early childhood development.
