Waste management: Kerala govt plans to rope in private players

Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala government has initiated moves to partner with private entities for systematic waste management. The move comes as the state government is finding it difficult to find land to set up plants. 

Similarly, the volume of waste generated in the state cannot be handled by local government bodies alone. They are facing challenges due to the different types and high quantity of waste accumulated. Maximum waste is generated from developed and industry areas.

The government aims to hand over small and large projects to private firms and entrepreneurs. They will be given benefits, including subsidies. 

The government also realises that the waste issue is also an opportunity for flourishing a waste management industry that can generate revenue. An expected turnover of 1000 crores is eyed. 

Entrepreneurs who have innovative technologies can benefit from this plan. The government has assured to help empaneled and investment-ready entrepreneurs by providing technical support to separate organic or inorganic waste.
