Girls should say ‘get lost’ when someone demands dowry: CM Pinarayi Vijayan

Kochi: Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said that present-day girls should reject marriage proposals demanding dowry by saying ‘get lost’. He was speaking to the media ahead of the Nava Kerala Sadas in Kochi regarding the suicide death of Dr Shahna in Thiruvananthapuram.

Society should have a general awareness that dowry should neither be sought nor given. The CM also said that along with collective societal action, strong measures must also be put in place against this. 

The CM spoke about how strict action was taken in the Vismaya case where the young woman killed herself over incessant dowry demands from her husband. Only if a society is able to create strong public awareness against dowry can such incidents be stopped from happening again, he said.
