Geevarghese Mar Coorilose announces decision to step down as Metropolitan

Kothamangalam: Metropolitan Geevarghese Mar Coorilose of Niranam Diocese of the Jacobite Syrian Christian Church announced that he will be stepping down from the position of Metropolitan and an official confirmation in this regard will be made after meeting with Patriarch Moran Mor Ignatius Aphrem II in November.

As per reports, Geevarghese Mar Coorilose expressed desire to step down from the post during the holy mass at Kothamangalam Mar Thoma Cheriapally on a feast day (Kanni 20 Perunnal). He announced that he will be relinquishing the post of Niranam Diocese Metropolitan and all the privileges and rights associated with it.

“I have been planning to relinquish the responsibility of Metropolitan for a long time. I have decided to spend the rest of my life in prayers, social service, reading and writing,” he said.

Geevarghese Mar Coorilose, an orator and a popular face known for openly expressing his political stances and pro-Left activities, was appointed as the Metropolitan in July 2006. He has now decided to step down after having served the post for 17 years.
