From scrap collectors to proud parents of a doctor — Anjali’s story of grit and grace

Cheruvathur (Kasaragod): After years of struggle and sacrifice, a day of joy has finally arrived for Muthu and Marimuthu of Madivayal in Pilikkode. For this humble couple who made a living collecting scrap plastic and aluminium utensils, their daughter’s success has become a moment of immense pride — and proof that dreams do come true.

Their daughter Dr Anjali has just completed her house surgency and will return home in 10 days. It’s a long-awaited homecoming that marks the culmination of perseverance, hope and unwavering belief in education.

At a recent convocation held at Coimbatore Medical College, Tamil Nadu Higher Education Minister R S Rajakannappan personally handed over her certificate — a deeply emotional moment for a family that has battled great odds.

Anjali’s journey began in modest surroundings. She completed her primary education at Cheruvathur Government Welfare UP School. At Pilikkode Higher Secondary School, she secured A+ in all subjects for SSLC, and repeated the feat during her Plus Two Science course at Kuttamath Government Higher Secondary School.

She went on to gain admission for MBBS at the prestigious Coimbatore Medical College.

Her parents, Muthu and Marimuthu, are well known in Cheruvathur and Pilikkode. Years ago, Muthu migrated from Tamil Nadu in search of work, eventually settling in Madivayal. Through sheer hard work — collecting and selling scrap — the couple sustained their family and quietly saved what little they could for their children's education.

They have three children. Despite financial hardships, they ensured each of them received a good education. Their daughter Revathi now works as a postal assistant at Elambachi Post Office, while their son Surya is employed in a private firm.

Dr Anjali’s achievement is not just a personal milestone, but a glowing tribute to her parents’ resilience — and a reminder that even from the most humble beginnings, greatness can rise.
