Fake Monsoon Bumper tickets in Kerala: QR code fails to detect fraud

Parassala (Thiruvananthapuram): A wave of counterfeit lottery tickets has been reported in the border areas of Kerala and Tamil Nadu, with scammers offering what they claim to be bumper prize tickets at a discount. These fake tickets mimic the Monsoon Bumper first prize ticket, which was said to offer a grand prize of Rs 10 crore.
Scammers target people with the promise that a Tamil Nadu resident has already won the Rs 10 crore prize. They proposed that for Rs 9 crore, they would exchange the fake ticket on the black market. To convince victims, they sent photos of the ticket through WhatsApp and even shared a video showing the lottery results on the Bhagya Keralam app.
The counterfeit tickets closely resemble real ones, featuring identical warnings and signs. However, there is one critical error: the ticket reads "Kerala Durkar" instead of "Kerala Sarkar." This minor mistake is difficult to spot at first glance.
Even more concerning, the scammers have accurately replicated the QR code used by the lottery department to verify the authenticity of tickets. The Bhagya Keralam App, designed to prevent fraud, seems to be tricked by the fake tickets. When the QR code from these counterfeit tickets is scanned, the app shows a first prize verification result. However, when attempting to claim the prize, the app indicates that the ticket has already been claimed.
This sophisticated fraud raises questions about the effectiveness of the QR code system and the Bhagya Keralam App in detecting counterfeit tickets. It is puzzling how the security measures of the government system could be compromised.
