Excise officer hit and injured by scooter, youth arrested

Pulpally (Wayanad): Excise officer was hit and injured by two youths riding a scooter, during a vehicle inspection in Perikkalloor, Wayanad. The severely injured civil excise officer, Rajesh, was first taken to a hospital in Bathery but was later shifted to a private hospital in Kozhikode . Police arrested one of the culprits, Ajith (23), from Pulpally town. His accomplice had already fled.
The incident happened around 10.15 pm, Saturday. Excise’s interceptor (KEMU) unit reached Perikkalloor by 9.45 pm following a tip off that two young men in possession of ganja would pass by on scooter. The inspection had already started by the time the culprits reached. They ran the scooter over the excise officials who signalled them to stop.
Other officials managed to run away from the impact, but officer Rajesh could not, and suffered serious injuries. The offenders managed to escape when the attention of the officials was shifted to the injured officer. Pulpally police were informed straight away and the criminals were found by the police patrolling unit by early morning, Tuesday. On seeing the police, Ajith’s accomplice fled from the spot.
The police have registered a case for multiple charges including attempted murder. The search is on for the accomplice who is a native of Meenangadi.
