Ernakulam-Shoranur third line: DPR estimates ₹12,000 Cr cost, speed up to 160 kmph

Kochi: The Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the proposed Ernakulam-Shoranur third railway line has been completed. The project is estimated to cost Rs 12,000 crore, with construction costs calculated at approximately Rs 100 crore per kilometre. As per the Railway Board’s policy, all new railway projects must support speeds of 160 kmph. The Railway Construction Department has prepared the DPR after completing location surveys and alignment studies.
However, the railway is currently assessing passenger fare revenue, which alone may not be sufficient to justify the project’s viability. Given the limited revenue potential, sources indicate that securing Railway Board approval remains uncertain. Despite this, a decision has already been made to submit the DPR later this month.
According to railway data, passenger numbers increase by an average of 2 per cent annually. A survey conducted in 2015 had estimated a cost of Rs 1,500 crore for a 107-kilometre stretch supporting a speed of 80 kmph.
The project to enhance train speeds is being undertaken at the railway’s expense. Constructing a new track adjacent to the existing Ernakulam-Shoranur line, which has numerous curves and bends, will not significantly increase train speeds. Therefore, the third track is planned to be as straight as possible and will not be aligned close to the existing track.
The new line will include stations at Ernakulam South, Ernakulam North, Aluva, Thrissur, and Shoranur. Studies have been conducted on operating trains at speeds of 110 kmph, 130 kmph, and 160 kmph. The feasibility of a fourth line alongside the third has also been examined. It is estimated that approximately 250 hectares of land will be required for the new line.
