Munnar: Eravikulam National Park in Kerala's Western Ghats has been recognized as India's best national park. The park achieved an impressive score of 92.97 per cent in the Management Effectiveness Evaluation (MEE) reports for 2020-2025, conducted by the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change.

Eravikulam shared the top honour with Dachigam National Park in Jammu and Kashmir. The evaluation, based on global standard IUCN-WCPA criteria, comprehensively assessed 438 protected forest areas across the country, showcasing Kerala's leading position in national park management.

A key reason for Eravikulam's distinction is its crucial role as the primary sanctuary for the endangered Nilgiri Tahr. These unique mountain goats are a wildlife species of extreme conservation importance, found in very few places globally and facing severe threats of extinction. The park's rich biodiversity, including approximately 20 rare Kurinji species like the iconic Neelakurinji, which blooms once every 12 years, contributes significantly to its ecological value. The pristine ecological integrity of this Western Ghats forest region, a recognized UNESCO World Heritage site, further enhances its standing.

Minister A.K. Saseendran congratulated the Kerala Forest Department officials. He praised their great work in looking after and preserving the park. Chief Wildlife Warden Pramod G. Krishnan said that this award is a special gift as Eravikulam National Park celebrates its 50th year.
