Elephant turns violent during temple festival in Koyilandy; Mahout injured

Kozhikode: A tusker named ‘Pakathu Sreekuttan’ turned violent amidst the Aaraattu procession at the Viyyur Vishnu Temple in Koyilandy on Sunday night.

Elephant mahout Sumesh who was injured in the incident has been admitted to the medical college. He is a native of Vaikom in Kottayam. 

The jumbo wreaked havoc in the region by destroying trees, electric posts and hundis at the temple. The efforts of the forest department officials and the elephant squad went in vain as they failed to gain control of the elephant. 

The tusker is still spreading panic in the area. Police and fireforce are taking stock of the situation.
