Elephant loses tusk in road accident in Ernakulam

Paravoor: An elephant lost one of its tusks in a freak accident while being escorted in a vehicle to take part in a temple festival here. 

Following the incident, the elephant was rushed to Mannathala in Thrissur for treatment. 

The incident happened yesterday early morning around 5 AM. The tusker Kolakkadan Kuttikrishnan (20) met with the accident on the NH66 stretch while being transported from Kodungallur to Muvattupuzha on a lorry. 

The mishap happened on the narrow stretch in Moothakunnam when a lorry coming in the opposite direction carrying gas cylinders rammed into the elephant’s tusk.

The tusk came off in its entire length. The animal writhing in pain bled uncontrollably. Forest officials rushed to the spot on hearing the news and took the tusk into custody. However, the local police claimed they were unaware of such an accident on the Moothakunnam-Paravur road.
