Education dept emerges as first big challenge for new Kerala Govt

Thrissur: As the new government assumes office, the first major challenge is expected to confront the General Education Department and its minister. Following the change in government after 10 years, a majority of those holding key positions in the department are likely to step down even before the next academic year begins.
Officials serving in crucial posts such as SCERT Director, SSK Project Director, SIEMAT Director, and SCOLE Kerala Director are reportedly expected to vacate their positions in the coming days. Also, several officials in the Directorate of General Education and the Higher Secondary Directorate have already been transferred or shifted following the change in administration.
The financial strain arising from Kerala not joining the PM SHRI portal when it opened in January is also expected to become a major issue. The Centre had again written to the state Chief Secretary recently urging the implementation of PM SHRI. A senior SSK official had travelled to Delhi recently seeking release of funds, but discussions reportedly failed to progress due to the PM SHRI issue. With central assistance drying up, the functioning of SSK has already begun to suffer.
This year’s annual vacation training for teachers is also shrouded in uncertainty. SSK authorities say direct teacher training sessions may have to be avoided due to lack of funds. Discussions are currently underway to conduct the training online instead.
Decisions on these matters are expected only after the new education minister and administrative setup formally assume charge. After the swearing-in ceremony, the government will have only a few days to act. Meanwhile, although the Muslim League has declared it will not give up the education portfolio, there are indications that the Congress may eventually take over the department.
