Dumping plastic in forests to attract ₹2,000 fine from December 1 in Kerala

Thiruvananthapuram: A fine of ₹2,000 will be imposed on those who dump plastic and non-biodegradable waste in protected areas, including national parks, wildlife sanctuaries and community reserves. The rule will come into effect from December 1, 2026. Officers of the rank of Beat Forest Officer or above will be authorised to impose the fine on the spot. Those who fail to pay will be booked under the Wildlife Protection Act.
The rule will apply not only to visitors but also to those travelling through protected areas to reach settlements inside forests or for other purposes. The fine collected will be used exclusively for cleaning protected areas. A committee comprising forest department officials, VSS-EDC representatives and local body representatives will be formed to implement green protocols in protected areas.
Plastic covers and containers containing food waste discarded by visitors pose a threat to the lives of wild animals and birds when they consume them. Plastic waste also endangers the ecosystem.
Nearly 29 per cent of Kerala's geographical area is covered by forests, which are interspersed with settlements, agricultural lands and plantations.
