Alappuzha: A heated argument broke out between Ambalappuzha MLA G. Sudhakaran and CPM workers at Government UP School, Neerkunnam, in Alappuzha on Friday.

Sudhakaran reached the school along with Congress workers after receiving a complaint alleging that soil was being illegally removed from the campus following the demolition of an old building. He said he came to verify the facts and planned to seek details from the panchayat secretary.

However, CPM workers and local leaders who were present at the school disputed the allegation. They said the work was being carried out with the required permissions and that official records were available.

A video of the verbal exchange between Sudhakaran and CPM workers has since surfaced on social media. The visuals show a heated argument between the MLA and party workers, with the discussion also turning towards his decision to leave CPM.

Political differences reflect in school row

During the exchange, CPM workers questioned Sudhakaran’s decision to end his association with the party ahead of the Assembly elections and alleged that he left CPM for political gains.

A CPM worker was heard telling Sudhakaran, “Sir was what we used to call you….After gaining everything from the party, you have now left; that is all.”

Sudhakaran responded that he had not gained anything from the party and that he was accepted by the people. In the visuals, Sudhakaran can also be seen asking the worker whether he had any shame, while the worker replies that the MLA should be the one feeling ashamed.

The incident comes amid a prolonged political dispute between Sudhakaran and the CPM leadership. He ended his 63-year association with CPM in March 2026, citing continuous humiliation, political isolation and public disrespect by senior functionaries.

The CPM had condemned his departure, describing it as a betrayal. Sudhakaran and CPM leaders, including Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and other former colleagues, have exchanged sharp remarks over various issues in recent times.

His criticism of CPM state secretary M.V. Govindan and the subsequent response from the party’s district committee had also triggered political discussions. After leaving CPM, differences between Sudhakaran and local party leaders have continued to widen.

Sudhakaran later contested the 2026 Kerala Assembly election as an independent candidate from Ambalappuzha with the support of the Congress-led United Democratic Front and won the seat.

Police intervene after scuffle

The argument at the school later escalated, with supporters of Sudhakaran and CPM workers involved in a scuffle. Police reached the spot and separated both groups to bring the situation under control.

CPM leaders alleged that Congress workers accompanying Sudhakaran manhandled party members during the incident. PTA president Prashanth Kutty, who was present at the school, was reportedly injured and admitted to Government Medical College Hospital, Vandanam.

CPM leaders also alleged that Sudhakaran had brought online media personnel to the school to create publicity.

Meanwhile, CPM supporters maintained that there was no illegal removal of soil from the school premises. They said only tiles were removed as part of construction work for a new building and that the activities were being carried out after obtaining necessary approvals.

Senior CPM leaders, including former MLA H. Salam, later intervened to defuse the situation.
