Denied candidacy, BJP woman worker in Thiruvananthapuram attempts suicide

Thiruvananthapuram: A fresh suicide attempt was reported in Thiruvananthapuram over denial of candidacy. Shalini (32), a BJP worker from Nedumangad, attempted suicide. The incident comes shortly after BJP–RSS worker Anand K Thampi died by suicide alleging he had been sidelined in the candidate selection, placing the BJP on the defensive as another case emerges.

Shalini had been involved in campaigning in the Panayikkottala ward of Nedumangad. A committed BJP worker, she attempted suicide around 2 am on Sunday, alleging that she had been excluded from consideration as a candidate. She attempted suicide by slashing her wrist. Shalini, who was admitted to the Nedumangad Taluk Hospital, is now out of danger.

Once the candidate selection was completed, Shalini’s name was removed from the list. Another candidate was about to be announced. It is reported that she was distressed by this, leading to the attempt.
