Death of Ernakulam boy: Kerala Police pushes helmet rule for low-powered e-scooters

Kochi, Kerala: To reduce the risk of fatal accidents, police have proposed making it mandatory to wear helmets even when riding low-powered electric scooters (e-scooters). Under the current Motor Vehicles Act, helmets are not required for e-scooters with a maximum speed of 25 kmph and a power output below 250 watts. Police have urged an amendment to this provision, citing safety concerns.

The recommendation comes after the recent death of an 18-year-old in Ernakulam, who was hit by a bus while riding an e-scooter. Following the incident, police submitted a report to the High Court calling for the change.

Currently, minors are permitted to ride low-powered e-scooters, and students are among the regular users. Police have argued that the risk of head injuries in accidents is high and that the relaxation should be reconsidered. Many food delivery workers also use these low-powered e-scooters.
