Cyber fraud on rise in name of gas booking; consumers targeted via fake APK files

Kozhikode, Kerala: Cyber fraud gangs are increasingly targeting consumers in Kerala under the guise of LPG cylinder booking and bill updates. Scammers are exploiting the shortage of gas cylinders to trap unsuspecting users.
Typically, victims first receive a text message on their mobile phones. This is followed by fraudsters contacting them via WhatsApp and sending a file named “GAS BILL UPDATE APK.” Users are then asked to install the app to update booking details or clear pending bills.
Once installed, the APK file gives scammers complete control over the victim’s phone. This enables them to access sensitive data, including bank details and UPI PINs, leading to unauthorised withdrawals without the user’s knowledge.
Safety advisory
Consumers are advised to avoid clicking on unknown links. APK files received via WhatsApp or SMS should never be installed under any circumstances.
For cylinder booking and payments, users should rely only on the official websites or mobile apps of gas agencies.
In case of urgent messages, consumers should not panic and must verify the authenticity directly with their gas provider.
Banking details and passwords should never be shared on unknown websites or apps. If you fall victim to cyber fraud, report it immediately via the national helpline 1930 or the official portal National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal.
