CMRL-Exalogic case: SIT issues notices to Riyas’ friends, begins questioning

Thiruvananthapuram: The Special Investigation Team (SIT) has initiated questioning in connection with the CMRL-Exalogic case. As part of the probe, the SIT has issued notices to Hassan Waris and Nikhil, friends of former PWD Minister P A Mohammad Riyas, also husband of Veena, daughter of Leader of Opposition Pinarayi Vijayan.
The SIT is currently conducting a preliminary investigation. No FIR has been registered so far in the inquiry, which was initiated based on a communication sent by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). The ED's letter demanded an investigation under the Prevention of Corruption Act.
During its earlier probe, the ED had recorded a statement from Waris that contained references to Mohammad Riyas. Waris subsequently sent a letter to the ED requesting to retract and rectify his statement, alleging that it was given under duress.
The SIT is investigating Pinarayi Vijayan, Veena and Mohammad Riyas, and Riyas's friends based on the ED's communication regarding the CMRL-Exalogic case.
The allegations involve bribery and hawala transactions. The ED alleges bribery against Pinarayi Vijayan, while accusing Veena, Riyas and his friends of being involved in a ₹25 crore hawala transaction.
