Child marriage in Kasaragod: Panchayat member who leads anti-child marriage panel among accused

Kasaragod (Kerala): A case has been registered against organisers of an alleged child marriage in this district, police said on Saturday.
Four persons, including the father of a 16-year-old girl, Padna panchayat member P K Thajuddin, a cleric of Azhikkal Juma Masjid, and Sabir (28), who allegedly married the girl, have been booked by Chandera police station, they added.
The action follows a complaint received by the Child Marriage Prohibition Officer, alleging that a minor girl from Valiyaparamba had been married off to Sabir in a ceremony held at a mosque on April 13. Police said Sabir later left for South Korea, where he is employed.
Complaint triggers court direction and FIR
The Child Marriage Prohibition Officer submitted a report before a magistrate’s court, which directed police to register a case and initiate an investigation.
Officials said P K Thajuddin was included as an accused as he allegedly took the initiative to solemnise the marriage in his capacity as secretary of the mosque.
Police further noted that Thajuddin also heads a committee constituted at the panchayat level to prevent child marriages.
Investigation underway, statements to be recorded
Police said the girl’s parents and other accused have denied that any such marriage took place.
As part of the investigation, statements from persons suspected of having witnessed the ceremony will be recorded. CCTV footage from the mosque will also be examined.
Police added that the accused will be summoned shortly for detailed questioning
