Cherry blossom trends on social media as pink bloom surprises Kochi

Kochi is witnessing a striking pink bloom along some streets, prompting comparisons with Bengaluru’s seasonal blossoms and even Japan’s famed cherry blossom displays. Social media platforms are now crowded with photos and videos tagged #cherryblossom and #kochi, though the trees seen in the city appear to belong to the Tabebuia genus, not true cherry blossoms.

In some areas, roadside trees have burst into shades of pink, creating a bright canopy that has surprised many residents. Daily commuters say the change is unusual compared with previous years.

Why they resemble Japan’s cherry blossoms

The comparison with Japan’s sakura is mainly visual. Authentic Japanese cherry blossoms belong to the genus Prunus, particularly the subgenus Cerasus, within the rose family Rosaceae.

By contrast, the pink trees seen in Kochi are reported to be Tabebuia, part of the Bignoniaceae family.

A familiar sight in other Asian cities

Cities like Bengaluru, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur already see Tabebuia trees often described as “cherry blossoms” because their short flowering period creates pink carpets similar to Japan’s spring blooms.

In Kochi too, the current flowering has sparked similar comparisons. With images continuing to circulate online, the phenomenon has drawn attention to the city’s urban flora.
