Cases of dog bite escalate in Kerala: Know the first aid tips

Thalayolaparambu: Rabies was confirmed in the dog which bit 11 persons in Thalayolaparambu. Following this, the authorities have initiated precautionary measures in the panchayat.

Vaccinations will be administered among the pet dogs and stray dogs here. Panchayat president ensured free treatment for the persons who sustain dog bites.

First aid tips for dog bite

• Clean the bitten area in flowing water continuously for 15 minutes. Use an antibacterial or any ordinary soap to clean the wound
• The wound is not required to be covered with bandages. Bleeding will usually stop within 5 minutes. Otherwise, cover the wound with a clean cloth and hold it tightly
• Medical aid has to be sought even if the dog had only scratched with its nails or bit without causing bleeding
• Vaccine has to be jabbed immediately if the dog bite is severe or sustained injury on face or anywhere near the head. In addition to this, anti-rabies immunoglobulin also has to be administered to the patient
• Full doses of vaccines have to be taken. The dose of vaccination is the same for all age groups
• Pregnant women should not refrain from taking vaccines
• Special care has to be given for children regarding vaccination
• Seek medical aid in case of fever or severe wounds
