2 FIRs filed in Sabarimala gold theft case; Unnikrishnan Potty named prime accused

Kochi: Two separate FIRs have been registered in connection with the gold theft controversy surrounding the Sabarimala Temple in Kerala.
The cases pertain to the gold stolen from the Dwarapalaka (guardian idols) sculptures and the temple door panels.
In both cases, the main accused is Unnikrishnan Potty, with several Devaswom employees also named as co-accused.
The two FIRs correspond to incidents that occurred at different times. Gold-plated panels from the Dwarapalaka sculptures were allegedly taken and melted in March 2019, while the theft from the temple door panels occurred in August 2019. Due to the time gap and the involvement of different officials, separate investigations have been initiated for each case.
Although Unnikrishnan Potty is the main accused, officials who authorised the removal of gold panels are also named in the FIRs. The internal investigation report by the Travancore Devaswom Board’s vigilance department details the role and responsibilities of each individual and the lapses committed.
With the cases proceeding in this manner, several officials, including Potty, have consulted lawyers and are seeking anticipatory bail. Potty himself reportedly met his lawyer in Kochi for legal advice.
Due to delays in filing the cases, there is concern that crucial evidence could be tampered with or lost. To prevent this, the High Court has directed that all seized documents be moved to safe custody, with copies retained by the Registrar General of the High Court. This ensures that the records cannot be destroyed or misused in the future.
