Class 10 boy succumbs to injuries after student clash in Kozhikode; 5 booked

Thamarassery: A Class 10 student, Mohammed Shahbaz, who sustained critical injuries in a student brawl at a tuition centre in Thamarassery, succumbed to injuries while undergoing treatment at Kozhikode Medical College. The 15-year-old passed away at 12:30 am on Saturday.
The brawl, which took place on Thursday evening, was reportedly triggered from a dispute over a farewell event. The disagreement, which began last Sunday, led to heated exchanges on social media, ultimately dividing the students into rival groups.
Following their tuition class on Thursday, students of Thamarassery GVHSS and Elettil School, along with others, including Shahbaz, who were not studying at the centre, got into a physical confrontation. The fight broke out around 6:30 pm near a tea shop on the Thamarassery-Vezhupur road. Locals and shopkeepers attempted to intervene, but another clash erupted nearby.
Shahbaz's injury
During the scuffle, Shahbaz sustained a severe head injury. Students informed the police that weapons such as nunchucks were used in the attack. Shahbaz’s relatives alleged that, apart from local students, outsiders also were involved in the assault.
Despite the injury, Shahbaz did not show external wounds. As a result, his friends took him home instead of seeking medical help. However, he later began vomiting and collapsed. His family initially suspected drug intoxication and contacted his friends, who then disclosed details of the fight.
Shahbaz was rushed to Thamarassery Government Taluk Hospital on Thursday night before being transferred to the intensive care unit at Kozhikode Government Medical College. Doctors diagnosed him with an internal brain haemorrhage and a fractured bone near his ear. After spending over a day on ventilator, he succumbed to injuries.
Meanwhile, five students have been booked over the brawl. They have been slapped with murder charges.
