Malappuram man blazes a trail by sharing fruits with birds

Mampad (Malappuram): MA Rasheed is very particular about preserving a share of the ripe fruits from his compound and feeding birds and other creatures with them. When he recently harvested Thailand guava, he kept aside 30 percent of it for the birds. This year, there was a better yield from his guava tree.

Initially, Rasheed used to cover the fruits with plastic bags to avoid pests and the birds. When the fruits riped, he left 30 percent of the fruit on the tree itself and harvested the remaining. He distributed the fruits to his neighbours, relatives and friends too.

The red lady papaya that is growing on the premises is also a favourite of the birds. Rasheed said that even in the countryside, the birds and small creatures are unable to find food nowadays. The sight of them having food from the trees makes me really happy, he said.
