Bird flu: Poultry farms, stalls in Mukkam municipality shut down

Kozhikode: Officials have directed to shut down all poultry farms, sales outlets and egg wholesale and retail outlets in Mukkam municipality.

The Mukkam municipality secretary issued the order in view of bird flu being confirmed in nearby Kodiyathur panchayat.

Transport of chicken, duck, quail and other poultry items for sale have also been banned. The restriction applies for fancy birds and their outlets, the order noted.

The license of all poultry farms and stalls and egg sales outlets in Mukkam municipality limits have been suspended temporarily according to section 482 (8) of the Municipality Act.

The suspension is a precautionary measure to prevent bird flu. Shops failing to comply with the order will be locked down and sealed.

Kozhikode corporation secretary Binu Francis had directed all poultry farms and stalls within the corporation limits to be shut down. Sale of eggs has also been stopped. All the measures are to prevent the spread of bird flu.
